Regional Variations in the Employment Transitions of Mothers in Germany and the UK
Biographical Information:
Between 1997 and 2005 I was a researcher in comparative European industrial relations, employment policies, and welfare states studies at the Labour Studies Institute of the Catholic University of Louvain (Belgium), working mostly on projects commissioned by the European Union. I have also briefly worked as a research manager for the Institute for the Equality of Women and Men, the Belgian equivalent of the Equal Opportunity Commission.
Previous positions:
Prior to coming to Britain , I have been a researcher in comparative European industrial relations, employment policies, and welfare states studies at the Labour Studies Institute, University of Louvain in Belgium . During this period I have published a number of policy reports and articles (see below). I have also worked as a research manager for the Institute for the Equality of Women and Men ( IGVM-IEFH ), the Belgian equivalent of the Equal Opportunity Commission.
Teaching:
I have been a teaching assistant on the following courses whilst at Manchester University: Introduction to Stata , Design and analysis of complex surveys , Applied statistics for Labour Market Research , Development Research Skills. Prior to that I have taught various ‘one off’ courses at the University of Louvain in Belgium on European compared welfare state analysis at postgraduate level and research methods with undergraduate and mature students.
Research interests
Gender and the labour market, including the gender pay gap, occupational segregation and part-time work.
Intersectionality, especially between class & gender issues
Employment and welfare states policies.
Social capital and social networks, especially from a Bourdieusian perspective
Epistemology, and the philosophy of social science
Quantitative and qualitative research methods: multilevel modelling, social network analysis, discourse analysis, focus group.
Education
2005-2006 MSc in Social Research Methods and Statistics ( University of Manchester ) with Merit (distinction for the dissertation). Dissertation : r eferences vs Constraints Revisited: Multilevel modelling of women working time preferences in England .
2003-2005 Part-time MA in Human Resource Development and Sociology of Work at the Conservatoire National des Arts et Métiers – CNAM (Paris), 1 st class (with distinction). Dissertation: Social capital and temporary agency workers employment trajectories .
