PhD Project

Community Cohesion and Healthcare: A study of Overseas Trained South Asian Doctors in the UK

Description

I joined CCSR in 2008 and following the completion of an Msc in Social Research Methods and Statistics, I commenced my PhD studies at the University of Manchester in 2009. My research project sets out to examine the experiences and contribution of overseas trained South Asian doctors in general practice in the UK. The project is funded by the ESRC and the case partner is British Association of Physicians of Indian Origin (BAPIO), a user led organisation.

I employ a mixed method approach in my research which includes: a statistical analysis of the General Practitioner Workforce Statistics between 1992-2009 and qualitative analysis. At present, I am in the 3rd year of my PhD studies and I have recently conducted 28 interviews with overseas trained South Asian GPs in three of my selected case study areas, Sheffield, Barnsley and Manchester.

I have presented preliminary findings of my research in various seminars and at overseas South Asian doctors’ forums. At present, I am undertaking analysis of my b qualitative research. The project is anticipated to be completed by the end of 2012.
