SARs News
- A new post is available at the Cathie Marsh Centre for Census and Survey Research. Applications are invited for a Samples of Anonymised Records (SARs) Development Officer.
An experienced researcher or project manager is required to contribute to the strategic development of the Samples of Anonymised Records data service (SARs) at the University of Manchester. This service funded under the ESRC Census Programme and is directed by Professor Edward Fieldhouse.
The post is available on either grade 6 or 7 according to experience and skills demonstrated. At Grade 7 a post holder would be required to take a leading role in developing future of census microdata. At Grade 6, the post holder would be expected to provide a key supporting role in the development of census microdata and to work with minimal supervision. Grade 7 would only be appropriate where the post holder has demonstrable expertise in census microdata and good awareness of the UK microdata user community.
This post is tenable from 1 July 2010 to 30 June 2011 in the first instance. The closing date for applications is 17 June 2010. More information can be found on the University of Manchester web site.

- Census workshops: more workshops have been organised for 2010 and those with a SARs element include the Overview of census data resources at the University of Essex on 15 March 2010 and the Health and mortality with microdata workshop in Belfast on 29 April 2010. (27 January 2010)
- A SARs presentation from the postgraduate training day on 18 November 2009 is now available online. (27 January 2010)
- A new report which reviews publications using the 2001 SARs, Use of the 2001 SARs, is now available. (22 October 2009)
- A new guide on imputation in the SARs, Guide to Imputation and Perturbation in the Samples of Anonymised Records, is now available. (22 October 2009)
- A new ethnicity theme page has been created which includes a link to the first of a new series of SARs research use examples. This example is on the topic of ethnicity and looks at age, household type and employment with the Household SARs for 1991 and 2001. (30 July 2009)
- The latest issue of the SARs newsletter, Issue 30 - June 2009, is now available. (29 June 2009)
- Emergency maintenance work on the Mimas servers providing authentication for Census Programme services hosted at Mimas is scheduled from 10:00 am on Thursday, 11 June 2009. Although most of the services will continue to run normally, users will be unable to login to use them via either UK Federation or Athens routes. It is anticipated that the period of unavailability will last for approximately two hours. The CDU would like to apologise to users of its services for any inconvenience caused. Further details and updates relating to the maintenance will be available from the news sections of the CDU and Mimas websites.
- report giving 'A business case for microdata files from the 2011 Census', written by Keith Dugmore, is now available. (5 May 2009)
- From 1 August 2009 access to the resources of the ESRC Census Programme will be via a single login route, replacing the current two options. Using this single login will present users with a list of organisations which have signed up to the UK Access Management Federation. This change will have no significant effect for most users. - The 1991 SARs and 2001 End User Licence SARs are now available free of charge to not-for-profit organisations, including Local Authorities, Health Authorities, Central Government and charities. Information on how to access these files is available on the SARs web site. (11 March 2009)
