Census microdata workshop

Social Science Building, City University, London

Representatives from three census organisations will be offering participants the chance to find out more about census microdata and to explore data online. This workshop will include an introduction to the data services offered by Census.ac.uk and is aimed at new users studying or working in the UK higher and further education sector, but is not limited to those already registered to use the census.

This year's RSS/SRA Cathie Marsh memorial lecture aimed to illustrate how the Samples of Anonymised records (SARS) from the British Census together with small area statistics can be used to look at key issues of social concern about the different labour market experiences of minority ethnic groups.

An introduction to government microdata - focus on ethnicity

This is an introductory workshop conducted jointly by the Economic and Social Data Service (Government service)and Samples of Anonymised Records Support team. The workshop will provide a general introduction to the microdata which are available for use by secondary analysts and the services that provide support for researchers. The afternoon will provide the opportunity to focus on data on ethnicity and users will undertake a hands-on session.

SARs introductory workshop: focus on the Small Area Microdata

CCSR, University of Manchester

This workshop will provide information on the various SARs data files that are available from the 2001 Census. There will be a particular focus on the Small Area Microdata (SAM) which contains local authority level identifiers for sampled individuals, thus providing better geographical referencing than other licensed SAR data. The afternoon session will include a demonstration on mapping census data and a practical and there will be plenty of opportunity for questions and discussion.

The workshop will provide a general introduction to ESDS Government surveys and the SARs and will include presentations on access and analysis issues and the research potential of these data. Hands-on sessions will enable participants to explore the data online in Nesstar.

Exploring Census Microdata: SARs User Group Meeting

This meeting, jointly organised by CCSR and the Office for National Statistics, will provide an update on the 3% Individual SAR, the 1% Household SAR and the 5% Small Area Microdata. The meeting will also provide examples of research uses of the SARs files and a discussion of users’ needs, particularly for microdata from the 2011 census.

Large-scale government microdata workshop: an introduction to the SARs and ESDS Government Surveys

University of Plymouth

This workshop will focus on the 2001 Individual (Licensed) SAR, including background, access arrangements and analysis issues. The workshop will also introduce the other SAR datasets as well as major social surveys supported by ESDS Government. The day includes 2 hands-on sessions using Nesstar and SPSS.

An Open Meeting on the Samples of Anonymised Records from the 2001 Census

The Royal Statistical Society, London

The first file from the 2001 SARs (the Individual SAR) is expected to be released by ONS at the end of September. The Household SAR and a Small Area Microdata file are planned for release at the end of the year. This meeting will provide information on the content of the files how to access them.
