Distance is the measure in kilometers of a straight line between the postcode of residence and postcode of workplace.
DISTWORK is banded in to seven distance roups with other categories for people working at home, people working outside Great Britain and those who did not state their place of work. For England and Wales, this calculation is based on the grid reference of the first address in the psotcode as listed in the Central Postcode Directory (CPD). This is normally accurate to 100m. For Scotland, the calculation is based on the centroid of the populated part of the postcode, and given to the nearest 10m. Further information on this variable may be available from the documentation on the SARs website http://www.ccsr.ac.uk/sars/1991.
