We recommend that new users view the Introduction to the SARs training document and appropriate codebooks for better understanding of the data.
SAR files contain both original variables, obtained directly from ONS, and variables derived from these by CCSR. When seeking information about a variable, or for a list of variables, you may need to check the codebook for both the original and derived variables.
The latest codebook, in the style of the 2001 codebooks, is available gb91hhd-codebook.pdf. Older original documetation is also available:

Copies of 1991 Questionnaires and Definitions are available from Census.ac.uk.
These files are the SARs documentation in XML DDI format, as used internally in our Nesstar server. Most users will not find these useful and would be better looking at the documentation or dataset pages rather than this raw metadata.
