Research theme of the POPLA research group at CCSR.

The MRPD project was funded by the Leverhulme Trust for three years between October 2006 and October 2009

Gemma Catney has taken up a research post with Queens University Belfast, working on the Northern Ireland Longitudinal Study.

Nissa Finney has taken up an ESRC Research Fellowship, at CCSR.

Gemma and Ludi organised a special session on ‘Migration biographies’ at the Annual Conference of the British Society for Population Studies, in Manchester, September 2008. Abstract and presentation. Ludi presented on “Immigrants or citizens? Distinguishing immigrant settlement areas from ethnically diverse residential areas. Abstract.

POPLA research trip to Buxton in September 2008.

Conference on Intercultural Cities at St Georges Hall in Liverpool, May 2008. Ludi, Gemma and Nissa organised a stall presenting work on migration and integration from the MRPD project.

 

Professor Sako Musterd (University of Amsterdam) visited POPLA on 3rd June 2008, and outputs from the MRPD project were discussed.

 

'Explaining ethnic differences in internal migration (and what they mean for segregation)' presented at University of Manchester CCSR seminar by Nissa and Ludi in February 2008.

 

Ludi presented on ‘Evidence and research’ at the Oldham Race Equality Partnership annual meeting in January 2008.

The second MRPD Advisory Group meeting was held on the 12th December 2007. Thanks to the Advisory Group for their very helpful feedback provided at the meeting.

Nissa presented on Dissecting diversity: cutting through myths of race, migration and segregation (abstract) at a seminar on Tue 23rd October 2007 at the Department of Environmental and Geographical Sciences Manchester Metropolitan University.

2007 Conference MRPD research was showcased at a 3-day event hosted by POPLA and held at the University of Manchester in May. The event, “Demography’s contribution to debates on segregation, diversity and integration” comprised two day-courses plus a one-day conference. More...

Which cities in Britain will become plural - where no ethnic group is a majority? Leicester about 2019 followed by Birmingham according to Ludi's review at BSPS conference (St. Andrews, Sept 2007), joining several London Boroughs.

Reports of ethnic group population forecasts for local authorities. Press release and review. The presentation led to a Today programme interview on 11th Sept (Radio 4) and wide media coverage (including BBC news and the Telegraph). In November 2008, BBC Radio 4's 'Our first plural city' describes social and political development in Leicester.

Ludi presented on ‘Minority White cities’ and Nissa presented on ‘The dynamics of Britain’s ethnic populations: the roles of natural change and net migration in producing the ethnic mosaic’ Abstract and presentation at the Annual conference of the British Society for Population Studies in St. Andrews in September 2007.

 

 

Nissa presented on Migration, Race, Population Dynamics and debates on Segregation, Diversity and Integration (abstract and presentation) at the Annual Conference of the Royal Geographical Society with the Institute of British Geographers (London, Sept 2007). The presentation led to a radio interview (Colourful Radio) and media coverage (including the Telegraph).

Ludi presented on Ghettos in Britain (abstract and presentation) at the Annual Conference of the Royal Statistical Society (York, July 2007).

 

Nissa presented on Too much immigration? Challenging the “yes” perspective (abstract and presentation) at the RSS conference (York, July 2007).

Ludi and Nissa published a paper on internal migration and ethnic groups. It reviews evidence on migration within the UK by different ethnic groups and presents new evidence through analysis of 2001 Census data. More...

 

 

 

In March 2007 Nissa presented the latest MRPD findings in the Geography Department at Swansea University.

Ludi talked at the CRE Race Convention on 27th November 2006, in a ‘presidential style debate’ with Ted Cantle on segregation.

Migration, Race and Population Dynamics was a key focus at the POPLA Study Week 2006, held last month in the Lake District. The week involved debates, presentations and reading groups on issues of migration, integration and segregation. More…

 

Ludi accused the Commission for Racial Equality of ‘institutional innumeracy’ for ignoring facts about population change in Britain, when speaking at the National Assembly Against Racism meeting at the Labour Party Conference, 26th September 2006.
