Substantive Unit 10 : Higher Qualifications by Gender and Age

by Jane Elliott and Wendy Olsen

Description

There are demographic differences in the chances of a person having a higher educational qualification such as a degree. The demographic difference arises from the way 'age' proxies (substitutes) for both the generation's policy environment and the person's changing interest in higher education over their lifetime. The unit begins by examining the rising likelihood of higher education among the younger age groups. Gender differences in the likelihood of having a first degree are examined. Finally, we compare the relative prevalence of studying maths and science subjects among females vs. males.

Objectives

  • to see that different age cohorts correspond to different birth dates;
  • to see how education policy shifts over time create differences in the frequency of higher educational qualifications in these cohorts;
  • to examine the gender differences in higher educational attainment
  • to notice the difference between degrees and other higher qualifications
  • to examine the prevalence of maths and science subjects among females vs. males
