Introductional Data Analysis Unit 7 : Standardising Values
Description
This unit describes how the descriptive statistics of a variable can be used to standardise values with the derivation of z scores. Z scores enable values from two differently distributed variables to be compared. For variables that are normally distributed they also allow calculation of the probability that a particular observation will have a value within a specified range.
Objectives
- Be familiar with the situations when it is important to standardise values
- Be able to calculate z scores and use them to compare two values occurring in two different distributions
- For normally distributed variables, calculate the probability of an observation falling in a specified range
