Being a PhD student at CCSR
What training is available?
Our PhD students have access to an extensive range of taught courses in research design and method. This is largely delivered through our own Masters course in Social Research Methods and Statistics. With much of our training provided through short one day courses, the course offers considerable flexibility to meet the contrasting needs of PhD students.
As a PhD student at CCSR you will also have free access to a wide range of graduate courses across the School of Social Sciences and Faculty of Humanities.
ESRC 1+3 students undertake the MSc Social Research Methods and Statistics in their first year.
What supervision is provided?
CCSR provides high quality supervision from experts in their field. All our students receive joint supervision with supervisors chosen to provide complementary expertise in the area of study and methodology used. Where appropriate we operate a system of joint supervision with other departments to ensure appropriate expertise is provided (for example, we currently have joint supervision arrangements with Sociology, Economics, Maths and Computer Science) .
What facilities are available to PhD students at CCSR?
In addition to a friendly and supportive research environment, all PhD students are provided with excellent study facilities. This includes office space with phone and a dedicated PC. PhD offices are integrated alongside those of research staff to encourage and facilitate interaction. PhD students are given free access to stationery, fax and photocopying facilities at CCSR and to the networked printer.
As a PhD student at CCSR you will also form part of a larger body of postgraduate students within the Graduate School of Social Sciences in the Faculty of Humanities. All our PhD students have opportunities, and are encouraged, to take on a limited amount of teaching support and research work.
