This session will take the form of an inter-disciplinary debate with contributions from economics, sociology, statistics and social policy. Questions will include:

   What do we mean by causality?
   What evidence is required to establish causality?
   How helpful is the concept of causality in the social sciences?

Each speaker will have up to ten minutes to set out their views on the above questions. We will ask for short contributions to be available beforehand so participants can download them from the web.


The debate will then be open to the floor.
