Planning your career

Chair: Ceridwen Roberts

This session will provide an opportunity for early career researchers and PhD students to find out more about the career opportunities offered across a wide range of sectors.

There will be a number of short presentations from early career researchers in central government, local government, the voluntary sector, academia, the commercial sector and independent research organisations. These will provide a brief glimpse into the everyday life of researchers, including some of the best and worst aspects.

A panel of senior staff from employing organisations will be on-hand to provide additional information about career opportunities and to field questions from participants.

The early career researchers will include:

Local government: Emma Burnett, Manchester City Council
Academic research: Cate Heeney, University of Oxford
Central government:

Samantha Dowling and Rachel Prime, Research, Development and Statistics directorate (RDS), Home Office; William Barnes, ONS

Voluntary sector:

Maya Lavie-Ajayi, YWCA England & Wales

Business Sector: Matthew Brown, BMRM

The panel of senior researchers will include:

Academic sector: Paul Atkinson and Sara Delamont, University of Cardiff
Voluntary sector: Colette Jones, Research Manager, YWCA England & Wales and Tony Newman, Principal Research Officer, Barnardo's Policy and Research Unit

Central Government:
