A Research Methods Programme meeting to discuss training provision

11.00am – 4.00pm, Tuesday 20 January 2004

The Council Room, Royal Statistical Society, Errol Street, London

This meeting is a follow-up to that held in October 2002. It will bring together all the training projects funded under the Programme - now a total of 18 (nine Phase 1 and nine Phase 2) as well as other RMP projects with a large training element, the new ESRC Research Methods Centre and other key training providers (e.g. CASS). ESRC staff will also take part so that our discussions can feed directly into their strategy.

13.30

Evaluation

We will pre-circulate some evaluation forms currently being used and aim to agree some standard questions, if not a standard form.

14.00

Publicity - how are we publicising courses? Can we make better use of the Methods Programme Courses Database? Should we provide information on level?

14.30

The e-Social Science Centre: Mark Elliot

What training will the centre be doing? Can we make use of e-science opportunities in RMP training?

14.50

The long-term perspective

What scope is there to apply for funding in response mode? There is a need for RMP projects to be able to develop training materials beyond the end of their funding period.

How can ESRC encourage training in areas with high demand but little provision?

Disincentives to provide training:

The RAE focus on research outputs is a disincentive to developing training. Yet that training is essential to deliver high quality research. How can we square this circle?

15.15 Should we provide some sort of kite-marking to courses or resources? Or do we rely on 'caveat emptor' and word of mouth?

15.30

The Research Methods Festival

Thursday 1 - Saturday 3 July 2004

St Catherine's College, Oxford

4.00
