MSc Programme Structure
Presessional Training
A series of one-day introductory courses on data analysis and statistical software are offered each September prior to the start of the MSc. These courses include: Foundation Skills for Data Analysts, Understanding Statistics, Survey Sampling and Introduction to Data Analysis 1 and 2. Students are encouraged to take these courses. They are free of charge to MSc students. See www.ccsr.ac.uk/courses/list/
Compulsory Course Units
All SRMS students (MSc and Postgraduate Diploma) must take taught course units totalling 120 credits (8x15 credits)
Methodology and Research Design
Statistical Foundations
Qualitative Research Methods
Introduction to Statistical Modelling
Survey Research
Multilevel Modelling
Optional Course Units
Plus two options from the following:- Longitudinal Data Analysis
- Systematic Mixed Methods Research
- Advanced Survey Methods
- Demographic Analysis [Not running this year]
- Social Network Analysis
- Another suitable course from SoSS (one only) (second semester only), to be agreed with Programme Director. Students should consult the SoSS on-line postgraduate module database for details about courses available.
Dissertation
This is a requirement for MSc only [N.B. Postgraduate Diploma students considering upgrading to the full MSc can choose to attend - subject to satisfactory performance on the taught course component, postgraduate diploma students will be invited to formally upgrade to the MSc, after the Exam Board)
a) to include four dissertation workshops
b) to include one compulsory presentation to staff and students
c) to link with "Methodology and Research Design" where a first draft of the
presentation is
to be offered by MSc students.
Additional Training
Students are also able to take a wide range of other professional skills training during their time at the University of Manchester.
