Careers

Graduates from the SRMS MSc have gone on to pursue careers in consultancy, research, policy making and university teaching in the UK and around the world.

From continuing to study for a PhD, to working in government or in some of the most influential research and policy organisations the MSc provides an Economic and Social Research Council recognized qualification that is of value across a number of professions.

There is an increasing need for well trained social scientists who are able to apply advanced methods of analysis to complex data and who have proven practical research skills.

Graduates of the SRMS course are in a good position to obtain jobs in government research and policy, including the Office for National Statistics, the academic sector, local government, charities and within the commercial research sector.

Students often undertake the MSc as part of career development programmes.

Feedback and updates from former SRMS graduates

"I enjoyed the SRMS MSc course very much. What I liked most about the course and what made it unique in my view, was its practical sessions and the tutorials. The lecturers did their best to accommodate everybody's needs, as the course attracts people from a wide range of disciplines. Finally the weekly seminars were really valuable as you could see the skills you had learnt used in real contexts. I am now working in a national UK charity" [SG]

"After finishing my undergraduate degree in Sociology, I wanted to develop my quantitative research skills and improve my knowledge of statistics. The SRMS MSc course allowed me to do this and was the perfect way for me to receive training in how to use relevant statistical software packages that would be marketable for research jobs. Because of the skills and methodologies learned from this course, I was able to secure my first research job after completing the MSc. I now work as a research assistant at the Medical Research Council (Social and Public Health Sciences Unit). I have been able to directly apply the statistical methods and skills I learned during this course to the data analysis that I am working on now" [JL]

"Studying part time I completed the SRMS MSc course at CCSR whilst also working as a Social Research Consultant. The course equipped me with many skills which were relevant to my job and have allowed me to improve my career prospects. I am now a Senior Research Consultant and Project Manager at a leading research consultancy and continuing the research interests developed during my studies" [SF]

"I was awarded a PRIZE scholarship to complete the SRMS MSc course at CCSR prior to embarking on an ESRC funded PhD.The course equipped me with many skills needed to become a researcher and its demands, in particular, it introduced me to both the theory and applied quantitative and qualitative practical aspects of social science, which I believe I have transferred into the workplace. I am now a Senior Intelligence Officer at the North West Cancer Intelligence Service, Christie Hospital, NHS Foundation Trust, continuing my research interests developed during my studies" [SK]

"I completed the SRMS MSc course as part of an ESRC funded 1+3 PhD programme at CCSR. I am now a Research Associate at the Personal Social Services Research Unit in the Faculty of Medical and Human Sciences. Owing to my focus on advanced survey methodology and statistics, the MSc course not only equipped me with the skills I needed to complete the PhD but also opened up employment opportunities in a variety of social research areas and indeed related fields" [CB]

"I returned to academic study having spent several years practising as a solicitor. I completed the SRMS MSc course at CCSR as an ESRC 1 + 3 funded student. I already possessed qualitative research methods knowledge and experience, so I completed the course to gain quantitative research methods training. Since then I have developed a mixed methods approach to socio-legal research which informs my work as a lecturer at Salford University" [KM]

"Prior to embarking on an ESRC-funded PhD at Manchester I completed the SRMS MSc course at CCSR. The course involved challenging and rigorous training in quantitative data analysis and advanced survey methods which I put to use in my doctoral research. I am now a Lecturer in the Department of Educational Studies at the University of York where I continue to benefit from the statistical skills developed in CCSR" [PW]
