ESDS Government GIS
Below are visualisations for fertility or mortality
for both 1991 and 2001 local authority districts in
England and Wales. The cross-sections allow
change/similarity in rates over time to be
identified. Since there have been changes to the
geography of local government during the 1990s, we
have adjusted the 1991 Vital Statistics geography to be
consistent with the 2001 boundary system.
Fertility
The Fertility CommonGIS Application
has 1991 and 2001 by
two different measures: General Fertility Rates (GFRs) and Total Fertility Rates (TFRs). The latter is
the most commonly-used period measure of fertility and improves on GFRs by controlling for age
structure. View the fertility GIS.
Mortality
The Mortality CommonGIS Application
has deaths by all causes and by various common causes of death.
View the mortality GIS.
A note on the methodology used to calculate the values
behind the GIS is available.
