Introduction to government survey data:
focus on crime
Tuesday 6 October 2009
Computer Lab 1 (A42/A45),
Postgraduate Statistics Centre, Lancaster University
This workshop introduces
the UK large-scale government survey data that is available for
re-analysis and teaching. The focus of the workshop will be on
crime-related data but many of the issues covered are applicable
to other areas. The day is aimed at those with little or no experience
of the data.
There will be an introductory
session on general crime statistics and how best to measure crime.
Participants will then learn about the data available, considerations
when using the data, the research potential of the data, how to
register for and access data and where to go for help. There will
also be a hands-on computing session to explore the data in Nesstar
and start analysis in SPSS.
Level of course: introductory
Pre-requisites: none
but some SPSS may be useful.
Please note that, although
this event is free to attend, cancellations received less than
48 hours before this event, or non-attendance at the workshop,
will result in a £20 cancellation fee being imposed.
