Introduction to Longitudinal Data Analysis
Dates: 10/06/2009
Duration: 1 day
Level: Intermediate
Course Fee: £175 (£125 for those from educational institutions)
Course Leader: Nikos Tzavidis
Course Requirements: Participants should have a basic familiarity with SPSS. Familiarity with basic regression analysis will be also assumed.
Course Aim:
To offer participants an introduction to the skills needed to understand different longitudinal designs and conduct analyses using longitudinal data.
Course Summary:
The importance of longitudinal analysis is becoming increasingly recognized across the social and medical sciences. However there are few analysts with the methodological skills to make appropriate use of longitudinal data. This course is intended to provide an introduction for meeting this need. Topics include: presenting different types of longitudinal designs such as Prospective Surveys, Panel Surveys and Cohort Studies. An introduction to models for the analysis of change will be presented. Finally, an introduction to models for longitudinal data analysis such as multilevel longitudinal models will also be presented.
Course Objectives:
Participants in this course will
• gain an introductory understanding of the concepts, designs and terms used in longitudinal research;
• be introduced to different methods of longitudinal data analysis;
• gain a general understanding of how each design is representing longitudinal
processes;
• will be able to choose a design, appropriate method of analysis and plausible model for a range of research questions.
Target audience
The course is designed for new users of longitudinal data and does not presume any previous knowledge or experience working with such data. It would be particularly appropriate for those who may anticipate working with longitudinal datasets. The course stands alone but can be also viewed as precursor to Longitudinal Data Analysis.
